The version of Switch I have here wouldn't handle the .caf file. But your solution worked perfectly. I'll add that you can drag the .caf file straight from Finder into GarageBand -- just make sure you then drag the audio clip to the left edge of the frame. I now have 49 minutes of usable .mp3 file.
