MacHeist Bundle 3 2009 – BOUGHT!

Well, I went ahead and did it, after telling myself I could jolly well do without without any of the apps in the bundle.

Except for The Hit List, which I purchased just days before the MacHeist Bundle 3 (2009) was announced. I ended up gifting it to my Mom, a Mac user (you get to assign the software license to another person on the purchase page).

You can click the image below for a larger version of my receipt.

MacHeist Bundle 3 2009 Receipt

After following the Tweetblast instructions, I got the licenses for Delicious Library 2 and Multiwinia.

Delicious Library 2 and Multiwinia added to the MacHeist Bundle 3 receipt

I used the Snap Web Address feature of LittleSnapper (included in the bundle) to perform the screen captures. Blurring out of the license details was also done within that software.

Converting CAF files to Other Formats Using Switch

Aug 18, 2010 Update: In the comments section, folks are having problems performing CAF to MP3 conversions on PCs running Windows. Try using the free Audacity cross-platform sound editor, and see if this works for you. There are two related YouTube video clips (Clip 1 | Clip 2) that offer further assistance with using Audacity. Good luck, and let us know in the comments if this worked.

The comments in the post, Converting CAF files to MP3 has led me to write this article, which explores a similar theme, but this time, focusing on CAF files coming off iPhone Apps, and using Switch, which allows for batch conversion of these files.

Step 1 – Get sample CAF files

In TUAW’s article, VoiceNotes vs. iDicto vs. Recorder vs. Record, there are download links for two sample CAF files produced by the iDicto and VoiceNotes apps (right-click to save to your hard drive).

Step 2 – Download Switch

Switch is a free audio converter for Mac and Windows platforms.

Download the free trial, which is fully functional, but will remind you to purchase the full version.

During your first CAF conversion, the software will download additional codecs / conversion algorithms, if I remember correctly.

Step 3 – Drag the CAF file from the Finder into Switch

Drag the CAF file from the Finder into Switch

You could also drag multiple files in this step.

Here’s where the true power of Switch comes into play, as it is able to convert multiple files, compared to only one file at a time if you used Garageband.

Step 4 – Select the file output format, Encoder Options and output folder

Select the file output format, Encoder Options and output folder

In this step, you select the output format, MP3 in this example, specify the sound quality parameters in the Encoder Options, and choose a destination folder.

For the destination folder, I usually just check the “Output to same folder as source files” box if I’m certain that the source and output formats are different. This way, the original files won’t be deleted by the new ones.

For the parameters in Encoder Options, just go with the minimum necessary if you’re not in need of audiophile-level quality sound. Here’s an example:

  1. VBR (Variable Bit Rate).
  2. Minimum Bitrate: 128 kbps.
  3. Maximum Bitrate: 320 kbps.
  4. Quality: 0 (Highest).
  5. Stereo Encoding: Joint.

MP3 Encoder Options in Switch

Step 5 – Run the CAF to MP3 conversion process

When you’re ready, just click the Convert button. A progress dialog box will pop up.

Switch conversion of CAF to MP3 in progress

If all goes well, you’ll find a shiny new MP3 file in your destination folder.

Your new MP3 file is ready

Good luck!

Quick demo of Voila

Voila is a screen capture software from Global Delight which allows you to drag and drop multiple images onto another image to create a composite.

I thought I’d try and do up a demo image for this. The screen captures are of “Apps I wanted the most from the MacHeist 3 Bundle“.

It also allows you to skew and sheer an image, and you can see the effect on the image on the right in the composite below (click to view a larger version in a new browser session).

Apps I wanted the most from the MacHeist 3 Bundle

To my knowledge, no other screen grab apps for the Mac allows you to do composites like what I’ve just shown.

Unfortunately, Voila doesn’t save images in the sRGB color space. Skitch doesn’t either. In fact, the only application that does this (out of several I’ve tried) is LittleSnapper.

Well, I still haven’t made up my mind whether to go ahead and pay up for the MacHeist to get LittleSnapper, or Voila.

In terms of sheer features, Voila wins, but LittleSnapper pulls me in its direction with its cool looks, library-based management of captures, the ability to capture entire web pages, and nicer-looking text annotations out of the box.

Methods for reclaiming hard disk space

TUAW reviews Sponge for Mac OS X:

Sponge, from Dare to be Creative Ltd., is a US$26 program designed to look for the space-wasters on your Mac and help you get rid of them cleanly.

The reader comments are also helpful, as there are suggestions for alternative software and methods to assist you in identifying large files and folders for potential deletion, most of which are free.

The other approach is to save the money and software and put it towards purchasing new, 1 TB hard drives which go for around $100 USD.

If you can’t drag songs on your iPod Shuffle to the order you want

On page 15 of the user manual for the 2nd-generation iPod (right-click to download), you get the following instructions for arranging the sequence of songs on a second-generation iPod Shuffle.

1. Connect iPod shuffle to your computer.
2. In iTunes, select iPod shuffle in the Source pane.
3. Click the Contents tab.
4. Click the blank header above the first column to arrange the songs by number.
5. Drag the songs to the order you want.

2nd-generation iPod Shuffle

The problem with that set of instructions is that it neglects to mention that the Shuffle button in the lower left-hand section of iTunes needs to be switched off in order for this to work.

iTunes - Drag and drop to re-order songs is allowed if iTunes Shuffle is OFF

With the Shuffle on iTunes switched OFF, a horizontal line appears when you begin to drag a song on the iPod Shuffle to help you properly position that piece of music in the list.

If iTunes Shuffle is switched on, you will NOT be able to manually drag and re-order the music on your iPod Shuffle, as shown below.

iTunes - Drag and drop to re-order songs is NOT allowed if iTunes Shuffle is ON

The horizontal positioning line will not appear when you begin to drag the song in this instance.

You must also ensure that you do not sort the list of songs by any column other than the number column, which is the first column, otherwise, you will not be able to manually re-order the songs.

Mac Applications, Programs and Software

This is a compilation of Mac software, paid or otherwise, that I personally use or am intending to try out. I’ve also listed web-based, online services.

Software I use

Firefox: I use this instead of Safari.

Google Gears: I have this Firefox add-on installed so that Wordpress 2.7 administration and management screens load faster in my Firefox web browser. If you blog or edit posts on a regular basis, this speed increase is very welcome indeed. Wordpress 2.7 gives you the option on whether to enable caching via Google Gears on a blog by blog basis.
Turbo mode: Enable Google Gears caching on Wordpress 2.7

Perian: Installing this piece of software allows QuickTime Player to be able to play formats such as AVI, DIVX and MKV, among others. It also adds subtitle support.

Document Palette: Allows you to create a blank document in the current folder that you’re in. You can define your own document templates. Read How To Create New Files In Apple’s Finder for more discussion on this topic.

Little Snitch: This software runs in the background and monitors all incoming and outgoing traffic with the purpose of helping you be aware of any packets generated by malware. In the screen capture below, OpenOffice wants to check with a service on their website, openoffice.org, which is a site I trust, so I would select the “Forever” option which tells Little Snitch to always allow traffic to updateext.services.openoffices.org on Port 80 TCP (http).

It costs $29.95 for a single license.
Little Snitch

ScreenToaster: A free, web-based software that lets you capture and record your screen, which is great for screencasts, demos, tutorials or simply to show off your game high scores.

Isolator: Isolator is a great (and free) way of hiding your desktop and other screens. Read my brief review on Isolator.

Dropbox: Dropbox offers 2GB of free web-based disk space for your files. It installs a folder on your Mac, and that folder looks just like any other folder. I keep my work files in this Dropbox folder, and any changes to the files or folder structure automatically triggers a synchronization process that updates a set of exact copies on the Dropbox server, which are accessible on your other Mac, Windows or Linux machines. New, third-generation iPod Shuffle from Apple

Apple’s Q1 2009 financial results

Apple just announced its quarterly results, and it looks the brutal economy isn’t bruising the fruit at all — the company posted a record $1.61B profit on $10.17B in revenue. Adjusted to reflect the subscription accounting Apple uses for the iPhone and Apple TV, that’s $2.3B of income on $11.8B of revenue.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs today sent the following email to all Apple employees:

Team,

I am sure all of you saw my letter last week sharing something very personal with the Apple community. Unfortunately, the curiosity over my personal health continues to be a distraction not only for me and my family, but everyone else at Apple as well. In addition, during the past week I have learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.

In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June.

I have asked Tim Cook to be responsible for Apple’s day to day operations, and I know he and the rest of the executive management team will do a great job. As CEO, I plan to remain involved in major strategic decisions while I am out. Our board of directors fully supports this plan.

I look forward to seeing all of you this summer.

Steve

How to increase the volume even more on QuickTime player

There are some movies or music that sound too soft when played in QuickTime, and you don’t like to have to push the system audio volume to the loudest in order to get a decent volume.

Here’s what you need to do if the file you’re playing in QuickTime isn’t loud enough and the volume slider is already at the maximum position.

Increase the volume even more on the Quicktime player

You’ll just need to hold down the Shift key while you press the Up arrow key. There won’t be any visual indicator that the volume has actually increased when you do this, so you’ll have to let your ears be the judge.

I do get the impression that the volume increase is only one level or “click” beyond the indicated maximum, and remains just slightly softer than what I get with the VLC media player at 400% volume.

To get the volume down to the normal max loudness, just hit the Up or Down arrow key once.

This technique works in iTunes too.
